Incoming Florida freshman Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.), the sister of current Gator third baseman Kasey Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.), was named the Gatorade Florida Softball Player of the Year Thursday. Fagan, a Dunnellon High School senior will be joining the Florida softball team in the fall of 2011.
Kasey was a two-time Gatorade Florida Softball Player of the Year and was also crowned the Gatorade National Player of the Year last year, just the second softball player ever to win the award. Sami will now become a candidate for the national honor.
Sami tallied a .693 batting clip with four triples, 51 runs, 17 RBI and 28 stolen bases as a senior at Dunnellon High School. A 2010 ESPN Rise All-American, Sami posted a state record 63-game hit streak during her sophomore and junior seasons and batted .629 with 234 runs scored and 141 stolen bases during her tenure at Dunnellon.
Sami helped lead Dunnellon to the 2010 Class 4A Florida State Championship Title and led Team North Florida to the runner-up spot at the 2010 ASA Gold Nationals.
Sami will look to join the Gators' squad that made its fourth consecutive appearance at the Women's College World Series this year in Oklahoma City, becoming the first-ever Southeastern Conference institution to make four straight appearances. The Gators were national runners-up and boasted four WCWS All-Tournament Team members, including co-Most Outstanding Player Michelle Moultrie.
