Tuesday, August 23, 2011 | Men's Basketball
Florida men's basketball has hired Preston Greene as strength and conditioning coordinator, head coach Billy Donovan announced on Tuesday. Greene most recently spent 2009-11 as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with Clemson men's basketball.
“We're excited about the addition of Preston to our staff,” Donovan said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we're looking forward to having him work with our team.”
Clemson posted a combined record of 43-23 and advanced to a pair of NCAA Tournaments with Greene on the staff. Clemson earned its first NCAA Tournament win in 14 years in 2011 when the Tigers knocked off UAB in the first round.
“I came to Florida to win and to contribute to the excellence that this program has had under Coach Donovan,” Greene said.
Greene is one of only seven internationally certified Level 5 coaches through the Poliquin International Certification Program (PICP) and is a BioSignature Modulation Practitioner.
This past season, Greene's work in the weight room with Jerai Grant was one of the reasons the Tiger center was among the most improved players in the ACC. When Grant first enrolled at Clemson, he weighed just over 210 pounds and played only 8.3 minutes per game. In 2010-11, he played all season at 230 pounds and was the team's second-leading scorer at 12.4 points per game. In his first season at Clemson, he had a positive impact on the play of first-team All-ACC forward Trevor Booker, who was selected No. 23 overall in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards.
Greene, a 1999 Clemson graduate, returned to his alma mater after multiple stops, including a one-year stint (2008-09) as the strength & conditioning coach for Stanford under head coach Johnny Dawkins. He designed and implemented all aspects of the Cardinal players' strength and speed development programs and oversaw the team's nutritional needs. Stanford posted a 20-14 record and advanced to the College Basketball Invitational.
Prior to his lone season in Palo Alto, Greene served as the director of strength & conditioning for Charlotte from 2003-08. He worked primarily with the men's basketball team under coach Bobby Lutz and also worked closely with the men's golf team.
Greene was an assistant strength, speed & conditioning coach at the University of Arizona for two years prior to his time with the 49ers program. At Arizona, he assisted with the implementation of strength, speed & conditioning for the football team, while serving as the head strength coach for the women's basketball and women's soccer programs. He also directed the department's nutrition and supplementation program.
The Peachtree City, Ga., native worked as a student and graduate assistant under Joey Batson from 1995-99. He was in charge of strength & conditioning for golf, women's soccer, men's tennis, and volleyball. He also assisted with football during his time at Clemson. He is one of several former student or graduate assistants under Batson to have been named director of strength & conditioning at another institution.
Several of Greene's assistant strength coaches have earned top positions with various Division I athletic programs. Jim Krumpos, who worked for Greene at Charlotte, is now the men's basketball strength coach at Miami. Bradford Scott, a graduate assistant under Greene at Arizona, is the director of athletic performance at Portland. Stephen DiLustro, who also worked alongside Greene at Arizona, is a sports performance coach for several teams at Stanford.
Greene earned a bachelor's degree in health science from Clemson in 1999, with a minor in sport management. He received a master's degree in 2000 from the University of Minnesota in applied kinesiology and sports management. Greene holds numerous certifications and memberships, including the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). He also recently earned certification as a performance enhancement specialist by the National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM).
He is the co-founder of the Eleiko Strength Summit, first held on May 8, 2010, at the Poliquin Strength Institute in Greenwich, R.I. The Eleiko Strength Summit is an invite-only event that attracts the elite level strength & conditioning coaches in the United States.
Greene is married to the former Jennifer Lynn Deyo. The couple has a son, Charles Preston (1).
