2011-12 Schedule Announced For UF Women's Golf
Wednesday, August 31, 2011 | Women's Golf
University of Florida women's golf head coach Jan Dowling announced the 2011-12 schedule today. The Gators will compete in four tournaments in the fall and four in the spring. The schedule has a familiar look as the team will compete in seven of the same tournaments as they did during the 2010-11 campaign. The only exception being the Betsy Rawls Invitational, which the team last competed in during the 2007-08 season.
"This season the Gators will be competing against the best teams in the country on a regular basis, which is always a goal when putting our tournament schedule together,” Dowling explained. “This experience is invaluable for our progress. In addition, the team earned an invitation into the NCAA Preview from their top 10 finish at Nationals, which will give us a great look at the NCAA Championship course."
The Orange and Blue open up their fall schedule September 11th at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., an event that spans three days. Last year the Gators placed fifth out of 21 teams at the College of Charleston hosted tournament.
The Gators then travel to Tennessee for their next two competitions, the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship in Franklin, Tenn. from Sept. 23-25 and the SEC/Pac-12 Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn. from Oct. 21-23. The events are hosted by Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee, respectively.
To round out the fall schedule, UF will travel to Austin, Texas Oct. 31-Nov. 2 to compete in the Betsy Rawls Invitational for the first time since March of 2008 where they finished second out of 18 teams.
After a 14-week hiatus, the team resumes the spring portion of their schedule with a return trip to the Northrup Grumman Region Challenge in Palos Verdes, California from Feb. 13-15. UF then travels to New Orleans, Louisiana to compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl from Feb. 26-28.
Following the road trip UF returns home to host the SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational, Mar. 16-18. UF finished first at last years tournament, marking the 17th time in program history that the Gators have won the SunTrust Invitational.
"Our only home tournament of the year, and the only event on Florida soil this season, is the SunTrust Gator Invitational,” Dowling pointed out. “This is an exciting week that the team really looks forward to. The field has improved dramatically and we can't wait to defend our home turf!”
The final tournament for the Gators before postseason play begins is the Liz Murphey Classic hosted by the University of Georgia, Mar. 30-Apr. 1.
“We are returning to the Liz Murphey in the spring, which hosts the National Championship in 2013,” said Dowling “The more experience we gain on really challenging courses, the more prepared we will be."
The SEC Championship will be held in Fayetteville, Ark. Feb. 13-15 at the Blessings Golf Club. Last season the Gators placed ninth at the SEC Championship.
NCAA Regionals will be held May 10-12 in three locations, State College, Penn., Columbus, Ohio, and Erie, Colo. and hosted by Penn State, Ohio State and the University of Colorado, respectively.
The season will come to an end with the NCAA Championships at a familiar course to the Gators, the Legends Club, in Franklin, Tenn., May 23-26. The Gators finished tied for 10th at the NCAA Championship last season, their best finish since 2008.
