The Pride of the Sunshine is a familiar sight for Gator fans at sporting events around campus. The UF band could be marching around the streets of London next summer at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The Fightin' Gator Marching Band has been formally invited to perform at the London Olympics.
The band's director, John M. Watkins Jr., told the Independent Florida Alligator that the Pride of the Sunshine received an official invitation via a telephone call on Friday. The band had submitted items earlier this year for consideration.
“It is a huge honor to be picked to represent the United States at the Olympics in London,'' Watkins told the Alligator. “I think everybody's really excited, but it's very preliminary at this point.”
The 330-member band is awaiting an official written invitation later this month and at that time will begin exploring options to finance the trip.
