Gators Have Solid First Day at 2011 Southern Intercollegiate Championships

The Florida men's tennis team opened their second event of the fall season on Friday at the 2011 Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. The Gators had six of seven players advance to the Round of 32 in singles action, while all three doubles pairs advanced to the Round of 16.
Junior Billy Federhofer (North Miami, Fla.) won his opening match over Liberty's Siim Tuus, 6-1, 6-4 and advances to face No. 11 seed James Chaudry of Mississippi St. Sophomore Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.) also won by a 6-1, 6-4 score, taking down Georgia State's Vincent Verpeaux. He will face No. 5 seed Juan Spir from Georgia Tech.
Florida's Frank Carleton (Naples, Fla.), the No. 10 overall seed for the tournament, won in three sets over Mercer's Pierre Tafelski, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Carleton will play Winthrop's David Bivens on Saturday. No. 7 overall seed Nassim Slilam (Paris, France) won easily 6-2, 6-1 against Lipscomb's Olivier Strecker. Slilam will face David Orces from The Citadel tomorrow.
No. 9 seed Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, over Samford's Zac Dunkle and will take on Georgia's Nathan Pasha on Saturday. Sophomore Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) cruised past ETSU's Roberto Ribeiro 6-2, 6-1. Butz will play No. 4 seed George Coupland from Mississippi State in the Round of 32 tomorrow.
Sophomore Michael Alford (Tampa, Fla.) fell to No. 13 seed Kevin King from Georgia Tech, 6-3, 6-1.
All three doubles tandems won on Friday to advance to the Round of 16 in the Division I Doubles draw. The No. 5 duo of Federhofer and Slilam breezed to an 8-0 victory over Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin from Winthrop. They will face UGA's Wil Spencer and Garrett Brasseaux on Saturday. Carleton and Newman won 8-4 over Miguel Cortez and Olivier Strecker from Lipscomb and will match up against the sixth-seeded pair of Panav Jha and Eric Quigley from Kentucky. Butz and van Overbeek beat Joe Dorn and Jeff Offerdahl from Vanderbilt, 8-5, to advance and will play Georgia Tech's seventh-seeded duo of King and Dusan Miljevic.
Action in both singles and doubles resumes on Saturday.
