Doubles Pair of Carleton and Newman Earn Runner-Up Finish at Southern Intercollegiate

The Florida doubles' tandem of junior Frank Carleton (Naples, Fla.) and sophomore Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.) earned a runner-up finish today at the 2011 Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia.
Carleton and Newman had to face their own teammates Monday morning in the semifinals before advancing to the finals match. Sophomore Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) and junior Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) came up on the short end of the all-Gator matchup, losing to Carleton and Newman, 8-6.
In the doubles final on Monday afternoon, Carleton and Newman dropped an 8-6 decision to the No. 1-seeded pair of Louis Cant and Malte Stropp from Mississippi State.
In the singles final, No. 2 seed Wil Spencer from Georgia won 7-6 (6), 6-3 over No. 1 seed Eric Quigley from Kentucky.
Florida's complete results from the entire weekend are posted below. The Gators will head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, next weekend for the ITA All-American event, which runs from Oct. 1-9.
