Softball Scrimmage Versus Santa Fe is a SEC "Together We CAN" Food Drive Drop Off Location!
Thursday, September 29, 2011 | Softball
University of Florida Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is encouraging Gator fans to help the Gainesville chapter of the Salvation Army as part of the Southeastern Conference's Together We CAN food drive that finishes up Oct. 2. Led by student-athletes, the SEC Together We CAN Drive is designed to support food banks and shelters throughout the southeast. Since this marks the five-year anniversary of the SEC Together We CAN Drive, student-athletes are hoping to collect enough food and donations to eclipse the 500,000 total pounds collected mark.
Fans are encouraged to bring as many canned goods as possible to the final two designated Gator athletic events this weekend: softball's doubleheader scrimmage at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium Friday and soccer's home match against Kentucky Sunday at James G. Pressly Stadium. All canned or dried food items are acceptable and the Salvation Army's most-needed food items include canned meats, rice and beans, noodles, peanut butter and jelly, as well as spaghetti sauce. Items must be sealed and in original packaging to be accepted. SAAC representatives will be present to help with the collection process.
Fans attending Friday's softball scrimmage with Santa Fe College can bring donated items to the front entrance of Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. First pitch in the doubleheader will be at 6 p.m. Florida's final designated food drive event takes place Sunday. Florida soccer fans can contribute canned goods to the drive before catching the No. 12 Florida soccer team as it takes on Kentucky at 2 p.m. at James G. Pressly Stadium.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees from each of the 12 SEC institutions are taking part in the “Together We CAN” drive and the items that each school collects will go to a food bank in each University's respective area. Each league institution will report the total amount of food and donations they collect and the SEC office will announce the league total.
The SEC Together We CAN drive is not a competition between the member institutions, but a chance for all the schools in the conference to work together to help people in need. Last year, the SEC Together We CAN drive collected 240,000 pounds of food conference-wide, over four times the previous year's donation total.
