Thursday, January 12, 2012 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.), Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) and Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) will compete in the 10th annual Freeman Memorial Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex that begin Friday on the UNLV campus.
In the last individual singles and doubles event of the season before the NCAA Championships in May, the Freeman Memorial features players from each of the top five-ranked teams in the country, with No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 North Carolina and No. 5 UCLA joining the Gator trio. In addition, athletes from No. 16 Southern California, No. 19 Arizona State and Oregon, as well as No. 36 UNLV will join the elite field.
At last year's event, Janowicz fell to USC's Maria Sanchez in the top flight of singles, 6-3, 6-0.
Cercone, the seventh-seeded in this tournament and 41st-ranked player in the country, drew Arizona State's Nicole Smith in the first round of singles, while Hitimana will face fourth-seeded and 18th-ranked Sabrina Santamaria of USC and Janowicz will play UCLA's Carling Seguso.
Cercone and Janowicz are paired in the 16-team doubles event and will play North Carolina's Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale in the first round.
Action begins with doubles each day at 10 a.m. PST on Friday and Saturday with the finals scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free. The event features two flights each of both singles and doubles along with consolation rounds.
