Gators Open Play at the 2012 SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships

The spring tennis season is officially underway after the conclusion of the first day of the 2012 SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships. The Florida men's tennis team had eight singles players and one doubles team in action.
Frank Carleton, a transfer from Wake Forest last fall, and Andrew Butz were the only two Gators to advance to the Round of 16. Carleton will face Georgia's Sadio Doumbia on Saturday, while Butz will play Jonas Lutjen from Ole Miss.
Newcomer Florent Diep, a mid-year enrollee from Paris, France, won his first match as a Gator, defeating South Carolina's Kyle Koch, 6-2, 6-2. Billy Federhofer and Nassim Slilam also won in the first round on Friday.
Michael Alford dropped his first round match to UGA's KU Singh, but bounced back with a straight-set win over Vanderbilt's Jeff Offerdahl in the consolation bracket.
Spencer Newman and Bob van Overbeek each had byes in the first round, but came up short in the Round of 32.
The doubles pair of Alford and Diep dropped a tiebreak decision, 9-8 (5), to Alabama's Ricky Doverspike and Filippos Tsangaridis. The three remaining doubles teams will compete on Saturday.
