Alford Wins Consolation Singles Draw at 2012 SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships

Florida sophomore Michael Alford (Tampa, Fla.) won two matches on Sunday to take home the Consolation Singles title at the 2012 SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships. After dropping his opening match on Friday, Alford won five-straight matches to finish the weekend.
Early Sunday, Alford faced Kentucky's Ryuji Hirooka and came from behind after dropping the first set to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. In the Consolation Final, Alford faced South Carolina's Kyle Koch and won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to claim the title.
Fellow sophomore Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.) also had success in consolation singles, picking up two more wins on Sunday. He took down South Carolina's Ivan Machado in two tie-break sets, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) in his first match, then claimed a default win when Kentucky's Alejandro Gomez withdrew.
In doubles action, Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) advanced to the semifinals with an 8-4 win over USC's Machado and Thiago Pinheiro. They were eliminated by Wil Spencer and Garrett Brasseaux, 8-3, Sunday afternoon.
