Senior thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) has been named the Southeastern Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance in the Alabama Invitational this past weekend, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala. announced Tuesday.
Mesic, who picks up his second career SEC weekly honor (April 7, 2009), captured the shot put title at the Alabama Invitational, earning the top mark in the nation with a throw of 19.95m/65-5.50.
Mesic broke his previous Florida program record of 19.53m/64-1 with the longest throw of the day in Birmingham, besting his opponents by nearly three meters.
The Sarajevo native is the only athlete in the nation so far this season to throw better than 65 feet in the shot put and is one of only four athletes in the nation so far this season to record an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark in the men's shot put.
The Gators now return home to the friendly confines of the Stephen C. O'Connell Center as the track and field teams play host to the 2012 Gator Invite on Sunday, January 22. Field events begin at 11 a.m. while running events will start at 1 p.m.
