On this date in Gators history: Oct. 6, 1923

Gen. Van Fleet Gen. James Van Fleet led the Gators in his first game as Florida's football coach since coming to UF as part of the ROTC program.

Van Fleet, who served under Gen. John J. “Black Jack” Pershing in World War I, scheduled a fitting foe for his audition: Army.

The Gators fought gallantly during a scoreless first half, but eventually fell 20-0 in their first trip to West Point.
