Leading Georgia by a touchdown midway through the third period, Florida coach Doug Dickey curiously opted to go for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 30-yard line.
Bulldogs safety Johnny Henderson lassoed tailback Earl Carr for a loss and Georgia, behind a quarterback named Ray Goff (left, courtesy of Sports Illustrated), seized on the momentum to score two touchdowns and win 41-27, dashing Florida's SEC title hopes for a third straight year.
The famous headline in the Jacksonville newspaper the next day -- FOURTH AND DUMB! -- defined the moment and gave the game a nickname that has stuck ever since.
