GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Somewhat lost in Florida's sixth straight win Thursday night against South Carolina was a big-time milestone achieved by the smallest man on the court.
Kudos to senior point guard Erving Walker, whose 14 points in a 74-66 victory against the Gamecocks pushed the 5-foot-8, 177-pounder from New York City over 1,600 points for his career, just the seventh player in school history to pass that impressive plateau.
Walker's 14 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers, gave him 1,609 for his career and moved him ahead of Neal Walk (1,600 points from 1969-69) to No. 6 on the all-time list.
If Walker gets 15 in Saturday's game against Vanderbilt, he'll pass Dwayne Schintzius (1,624 points from '87-90) and move into the all-time top five. After that, No. 4 Stacey Poole (1,678 points from '89-93) would be next on the list, but Udonis Haslem's spot at No. 3 (1,781 points from '99-2002) appears safe.
For the season, Walker is averaging 12.4 points a game, making nearly 40 percent of his 3-point shots, 80 percent of his free throws and leads the SEC in assists at 5.4 per game.
