University of Florida junior Bob van Overbeek has been named to the 2012 Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Community Service Team for the third-consecutive season, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The SEC sponsors Service Community Teams in all 20 sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight athletes from the SEC who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
As an active participant in the Goodwill Gators program, van Overbeek stays involved in numerous community activities. He has been committed to giving back to children in the Gainesville community by tutoring and giving talks at local elementary and middle schools, visiting UF's Shands Hospital pediatrics wing and participating in a school makeover for an elementary school. van Overbeek also took part in the Easter Basket Community Event this spring.
The Boca Raton native has shown a commitment to helping those less fortunate by giving significant hours to the Gator Tracks program, which provides shoes for needy children in the community during the holiday season, as well as canned food drives surrounding Florida football games in the fall.
The Gator junior has posted a 20-14 singles record for the Gators during the 2011-12 season. He has played at the No. 1 singles spot in the lineup in all 20 dual matches he has appeared in, as well as competing in doubles in 21 of 22 dual matches, compiling a 14-7 dual-match doubles record. He is currently ranked No. 37 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, the highest ranking of his career.
van Overbeek and the Gators compete in the SEC Tournament in Starkville, Miss., this week. After a first-round bye, Florida is scheduled to play on Friday at 6 p.m. against the winner of Thursday's Arkansas-Ole Miss.
