Friday, May 11, 2012 | Men's Tennis
The Florida men's tennis team is set to open play in the 2012 NCAA Tennis Championships this weekend, facing Navy in the opening round on Saturday at noon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators will be playing in the NCAA Tournament for the 22nd year in a row and are hosting the first and second rounds for the fifth-straight year.
The winner of Saturday's first round match between Florida (14-9, 7-4 SEC), the top seed in the regional and the 12th-seed nationally, and Navy (18-8) will advance to the second round to play the winner between Ivy League Champion Harvard (22-2) and Virginia Tech (11-11). The second round match will be played on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Florida faces Navy in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last five years on the men's side, defeating the Mids 5-0 in Gainesville in 2008. Navy claimed the Patriot League title this season and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last six years.
Harvard claimed the Ivy League's automatic bid and holds a 3-3 all-time record against UF, while Virginia Tech earned an at-large bid and has never faced the Gators.
The Gators are one of five SEC teams to host a regional on the men's side, joined by second-seed Georgia, sixth-seed Kentucky, ninth-seed Mississippi St. and 13th-seed Ole Miss. Auburn, LSU, Tennessee and Vanderbilt also made the field of 64 from the SEC.
