Lendl Leads Gators Up Leaderboard in Third Round of NCAA Championship
Friday, May 25, 2012 | Women's Golf
The No. 12 University of Florida women's golf team shot a nine-over 297 to move into a tie for 11th place after the third round of the NCAA Championship. UF, who entered the round tied for 15th, was led by junior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) who shot a one-over 73 during the third round at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
“It was great to shoot a round in single digits today,” Head coach Jan Dowling said. “The team was able to stay relatively patient, and we finished strong because of it. The course played tougher today with some difficult pin positions, and some more wind. We had some physical and tactical errors that held us up a bit, but it's always great to be playing in the afternoon in the final round of the NCAA Championships.”
Lendl, who's one-over 73 is her best round since September 12, 2011 at the Cougar Classic, had four birdies on her final nine holes. Lend will enter the final round tied for 101st.
Isabelle played well, and was able to post a really solid number for us,” said Dowling. “She has been hitting the ball well enough to score, but had some big numbers in the previous two rounds. I'm proud of her comeback, and it was impressive to make four birdies on the front side.”
Senior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) carded here fifth eagle on the season on her way to a two-over 74. Jensen will enter the final round in a tie for 23rd.
Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) will enter the final round of her inaugural NCAA Championship. Hedberg has a three-day total of 219 * (+3).
Junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) handed in a 76 (+4) and senior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) carded an 80 (+8) during the third round. Piccio will enter the final round tie for 54th while Watts will enter the fourth round tie for 101st.
No. 2 Alabama held on to the top spot with a tournament total of 877 (+18). The Tide lead No. 4 USC by two strokes. Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma and Giulia Molinaro hold a tie for the lead among all individuals after three rounds with a 212 (-4)
Lendl will tee off first for the Gators in the second round at 9:39 a.m. ET. All UF members will tee off of hole No. 10 to begin the second round.
“We are looking forward to tomorrow's opportunity. The plan is to go out and focus on our business, and let the scores take care of themselves. If we stick to our game plan and stay patient, I think our best round of the tournament is well within reach,” Dowling said.
