Thursday, June 14, 2012 | Track and Field
Five Florida track & field rising sophomores and four incoming freshmen are scheduled to compete at the 2012 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
This meet will serve as a qualifier for this year's IAAF World Junior Championships. Top performers will be part of the American team that will compete in Barcelona, Spain from July 10th to July 15th. The top-two finishers from each event will advance to Barcelona.
2012 SEC Champions and NCAA All-Americans Ciarra Brewer (Union City, Calif.) (triple jump) and Taylor Burke (Medina, Ohio) (high jump) are scheduled to compete in Bloomington this weekend. Brewer and Burke are both coming off stellar rookie campaigns, having qualified for NCAA Championships indoors and outdoors in their events. Brewer finished fourth in the women's triple jump with a personal best of 13.65m/44-9.50 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, while Burke tied for ninth in the women's high jump with a personal best of 1.83m/6-0.
Fellow rising sophomores Tyler Cardillo (Punta Gorda, Fla.), JL Hines (Orlando, Fla.) and Harsha Torke (Melbourne, Fla.) will also make appearances in Bloomington. Cardillo will compete in the men's 800 meters, Hines will run in the men's 10,000 meters, the final event of Saturday, and Torke will participate in the men's 1,500 meters.
Incoming freshmen Arman Hall (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), Kyra Jefferson (Detroit, Mich.), Robin Reynolds (Miami, Fla.) and Shayla Sanders (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) will also be competing for a spot on the U.S. roster for Barcelona.
Hall is the 2011 IAAF World Youth Champion in the 400 meters and will look to compete for the same title at the IAAF World Junior Championships.
Jefferson is the three-time defending MHSAA Division I State champion in the 100 and 200 meters and will compete in both events in Bloomington.
Reynolds, a sprinter and long jumper, owns 14 gold medals in the FHSAA Class 2A state meet, earning the most individual state titles in history. She recently was named the Class 4A-1A Girls' Athlete of the Year for the second time in her career after winning four state titles in 2012.
Sanders recently captured the Dream 100 at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York last weekend and owns the nation's top times in the 100 (11.33) and 200 (23.25). She won three gold medals at the FHSAA Class 4A state meet and was recently featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd.
The meet will be held at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University, host of five Big Ten Championships and the 1997 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
