Tuesday, June 26, 2012 | Track and Field
Former Gator All-American Wes Stockbarger advanced to the finals of the men's discus throw on Monday afternoon, highlighting the fourth day of the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field.
Stockbarger threw 60.19m/197-5 on his second attempt in the cage, finishing eighth overall and solidifying his spot in the finals of the event, contested on Thursday evening at 9:05 p.m. ET. Stockbarger is a three-time SEC Champion, owning two titles in the discus and one in the shot put.
Florida junior Dwight Barbiasz (Milford, N.H.) wrapped up his first season in the Orange and Blue at Hayward Field, as he turned in a seventh-place finish in the men's high jump. The SEC Champion outdoors in the men's high jump, Barbiasz cleared 2.15m/7-0.50 to tie with Montez Blair of the Cornell Track & Field Club.
Barbiasz was one of three collegians who recorded heights on Monday, joining NCAA Indoor Champion Nick Ross (Arizona) and NCAA Outdoor Champion Erik Kynard, Jr. (Kansas State). Barbiasz was the NCAA runner-up indoors and the NCAA third-place finisher outdoors.
Former Gator distance runner Mason Cathey advanced to the finals of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing third in her heat and sixth overall in 9:47.32.
The U.S. Olympic Trials take a two-day break before resuming on Thursday, June 28th for another four-day session with a whole new crop of Gators joining the Florida contingent in Eugene.
Sophomore Cory McGee (Pass Christian, Miss.) will compete in the qualifying rounds of the women's 1,500 meters at 6:50 p.m. ET on Thursday evening. McGee turned in a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships just a few weeks ago and ran a personal best of 4:12.61 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational back in April.
