GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- They're over.
The curtain came down on the 2012 Summer Olympic Games with an ... um ... interesting closing ceremony Sunday night, the artistry of which we'll leave to the interpretation of individual viewers.
Few will argue, however, the past 16 days made for riveting competition and drama.
And phenomenal success for University of Florida athletes, past and present.
Final tally: 14 of the 38 competitors with UF ties claimed 21 medals.
While we're at it, let's give a shoutout out to Gators swimming coach Gregg Troy and track and field coach Mike Holloway for the jobs they did as members of the Team USA staffs.
"Gator nation is the best. We worked hard. I personally seen most of the athletes working out. We push our bodies and that's why we did so well," former UF swimmer Ryan Lochte, who captured five medals at the London Games, told reporters covering the Games. "And you know what? We're like a big family so we always help each other out. No matter what sport it is, we come together and work toward the goal."
We played this game midway through the games, so let's play it again.
If UF was a country -- orange and blue flag and all -- it would have finished 10th in the world medal standings.
Call it the Gator chomp -- ala triple-jumpers Christian Taylor and Will Claye (right) -- heard around the world.
