As two-a-day workouts approached, UF coach Ray Graves looked to his first season in four years without Steve Spurrier at quarterback.
Graves prepared for a three-way battle to win the job as successor to Spurrier, the 1966 Heisman Trophy winner, between Harmon Wages, Larry Rentz and Jackie Eckdahl, with Wages (right) exiting spring drills having earned first crack the job.
Rentz had experience as a flanker, while Eckdahl was a local favorite out of Gainesville High.
“Wages is our quarterback. The others have to beat him out,” Graves said. “Rentz looks the best I've ever seen him. His weight is up to 164 pounds.”
