Three Gators Advance on Day Two of the Bedford Cup

Three Gators remain in play after the second day of the Bedford Cup on Saturday, September 15 at the Ring Tennis Complex.
“I thought we played well today,” said head coach Bryan Shelton. “We found ways to get it done. I was really proud of how our guys hung in there and got some answers. All in all, a solid day for the Gators and looking forward to a good day tomorrow.”
Mike Alford (Tampa, Fla.), Florent Diep (Paris, France), and Gordon Watson (Naples, Fla.) all advanced to the quarterfinals of singles play. Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.), the top-seed of the singles draw, suffered a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Dominic Controne of Florida State in the round of 16.
Luke Johnson (Leeds, England) rebounded from a first-round defeat to beat Florida Atlantic's Sean Bacha, 6-3, 6-1, in a singles consolation match.
In doubles action, Alford and Diep defeated South Florida's Guillermo De Vilchez and Oliver Pramming, 8-4, to move on to the semifinals.
“Mike Alford was a warrior today,” Shelton said. “He had some tough matches today and dug deep and fought till the end.”
