On this date in Gators history: Sept. 25, 1965

Five days after soaring to an all-time high No. 8 in the Associated Press poll, thanks to a season opening win over SMU, Steve Spurrier and the Gators blew a second-half lead and lost at home 18-13 to Mississippi State.
UF led 13-12 after Dick Kirk blocked a Bulldogs extra-point try that would have tied the game, but Dan Saget's 23-yard TD pass from Ashby Cook gave MSU the lead at 6:29 of the fourth quarter.
Spurrier (right), then a junior, marched the Gators to the Bulldogs' 12 in the final minutes, but Randy Jackson dropped a pass at the goal line as time expired.
And out of the rankings, the Gators tumbled.
