Three Gators Advance on Day One of USTA Clay Court Invitational

A trio of seniors each won their opening round matches on Thursday at the 2013 USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational in Orlando at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Mike Alford (Tampa, Fla.), Florent Diep (Paris, France) and Stephane Piro (Marseille, France) each won in straight sets to advance.
Piro, seeded second overall in the event, beat UCF's Kiku Aulina in the opening round and will face USTA junior player Kalman Boyd on Friday in the Round of 32. No. 4 seed Diep took down UNF's Caio Gomez with a 6-3, 6-3 victory and will play Georgia Tech's Carlos Benito in the next round.
Alford, seeded 9-16, beat USTA player Catalin Mateas on Thursday and will take on Florida State's Cristian Gonzalez-Mendez on Friday. Florida's Richard Brej also competed on Thursday, losing to 9-16 seed Brandon Fickey from Tennessee. Brej will play Shayann Vaezzadeh from South Alabama in the consolation bracket on Friday.
In the doubles draw, Alford and Piro are paired up as a 5-8 seed and beat UCF's Inaki Espindola and Jose Sangronniz 8-2 in the Round of 32 on Thursday. They will play FSU's Benjamin Lock and Joao Gauer on Friday.
