Hedberg remains tied for second of Northrop Grumman; Gators in fifth

After two rounds of play at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, sophomore Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) remains in contention on the individual board after carding a second round 72 (+1) to move to one-over for the tournament, just three shots back of leader Alejandra Cangrejo (-2) of Duke.

On a day when many names moved up and down, the top two names remained the same as Cangrejo was the leader after round one and Hedberg was tied for second also. Cangrego shot an identical round of 70 for the second straight day, but was able to gain two shots on Hedberg and Oklahoma State's Kelsey Vines, who was tied for second also.

As for the team standings, the Gators fell to fifth place, dropping 12 shots with a second round 302 to move to 24-over. Southern Cal holds the overall lead at 10-over (578). With the exception of Hedberg, many of the Gator players added three or more shots to their first round scores. Senior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) nearly matched Monday's total as she fired a four-over (75), but the remaining three Gator golfers shot 77 or higher.

“It was a tough day for us,” Florida head coach Emily Bastel said. “We did a lot of things well, but overall made too many mistakes. We had a good practice after the round and will use that to execute better tomorrow.”

For Hedberg, the sophomore will go into Wednesday's final round looking for her fourth medalist honor of the season and fourth of her career. Currently, only six other Gators in school history have won at least four tournaments in their careers. None have won more than three in one year alone.

Starting her day at the first hole, the Spaniard rolled off two straight birdies on the first two holes, but then suffered one bogey before reaching the turn. The back nine wasn't as kind to Hedberg as three more bogeys had to be written on her scorecard, but she was able to finish on a high note with a birdie on the par four, 18^th, her third birdie of the day.

As for the rest of the Gators, behind Lendl, who sits in a tie for 23^rd at seven-over (149), senior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) is also in a tie for 23^rd after she dropped seven shots with a 78. Piccio is currently at seven-over (149) also.

Sophomore Anna Young (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) shot a second round 77 (+6) to drop to nine-over (151) in a tie for 37^th and then rounding out the lineup was junior Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey), who couldn't get anything going and carded a 12-over (83) to fall to a tie for 75^th at 20-over (162).

Play will conclude tomorrow with the final round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge and live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com. Groups are set to tee off at 11 a.m. EST by shotgun start.
