Florida Men's Golf Improves on Day Two of NCAA Championships
Wednesday, May 29, 2013 | Men's Golf
After recording an opening round 291 (+11), the University of Florida men's golf team rebounded with a 283 (+3) for the second round of the 2013 NCAA Championships in Woodstock, Ga. on Wednesday, May 29. The team, in 26th place, holds a two-round score of 574 (+14) heading into tomorrow's final round of stroke play.
“The difference between playing in the morning and the afternoon can be pretty significant,” head coach Buddy Alexander commented. “Obviously the greens were much softer today. There wasn't as much wind and I thought the hole locations were a lot easier today.”
Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) were the team's lowest scorers on Wednesday morning at the Capital City Club – Crabapple Course. Each player recorded a 69 (-1) on the par 70, 7,319 yard course. It marked the team's first two rounds under par at this year's national tournament.
Starting on the par-four, 10th hole, McCumber opened his second round of the NCAA Championships with a bogey. The senior captain rallied with two straight birdies to bring his score to one-under par. He recorded par on each of the remaining holes on his front nine to stay at one-under. McCumber recorded birdies on No. 2 and 3 to bring his round total to three-under. Bogeys on the fourth and ninth hole put him back to one-under for the day. The Ponte Vedra, Fla. native is the UF's lowest scorer through two rounds at one-over par. He is tied for 42nd place.
Tomlinson rallied from a first round 80 (+10) to score a 69 (-1) on the second day of competition. He was two-over par through the first 10 holes of the day before recorded three birdies on the final eight holes. The sophomore hailing from Gainesville, Fla. is currently nine-over through the first two days at the Capital City Club.
Senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) finished in 72 strokes (+2) for the second consecutive day. Vogel owns a score of 144 (+4) heading into the final round of stroke play on Thursday.
Sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) was one stroke worse than his opening round score, tallying a 73 (+1). Banks registered birdies on two of the final five holes. He is five-over par for the national tournament.
Senior Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) wraps up the Gators' lineup on the second day. Mou shot a 75 (+5) for the second day in-a-row and is now 10-over par for the event.
“It's disappointing,” concluded Alexander. “We have driven the ball really well all year long and have driven the ball poorly this week. Tee to greens, greens in regulation, we have been solid statistically all year long. We haven't hit greens and we sure haven't made any putts. When all three facets of the game are not particularly good, it doesn't matter how hard you try or how smart you play. You're just not going to get it done. That is what is happening so far.”
Tomorrow will mark the end of stroke play at the 2013 NCAA Championships. The top-eight teams after tomorrow's round will advance to match play, which will decide the 2013 National Championship. The Gators will tee off at 7:50 a.m. tomorrow morning. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
