Florida Men Named USTFCCCA Scholar Team of the Year
Wednesday, July 24, 2013 | Track and Field
The University of Florida men's track & field team was named the Scholar Team of the Year in Division I for the 2013 indoor and outdoor seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Gators earned the distinction as a result of being the highest-placing team with at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively.
Finishing the 2012-13 campaign with a cumulative 3.016 team GPA, the Gators swept the indoor and outdoor Scholar Team of the Year honors in 2013 with runner-up and co-champion finishes at the NCAA Division I Indoor and Outdoor Championships, respectively. Florida also accomplished this feat during the 2011-12 academic year when it won both the indoor and outdoor team titles. The Gators are the first men's squad to claim two straight Scholar Team of the Year awards.
The Gator women were also honored with All-Academic distinction as a squad for the third straight year, turning in a cumulative team GPA of 3.14. Individually, 11 Gators earned All-Academic individual accolades, seven on the women's side and four for the men.
A total of 711 women from 187 institutions and 448 men from 149 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined efforts in competition and in the classroom. 187 women's programs and 111 men's squads earned team distinction as well.
The Gator women were one of 10 SEC teams to earn All-Academic distinction and the men were one of five. The University of Florida was one of five Southeastern Conference institutions to receive All-Academic nods for both men's and women's programs, along with Auburn, Alabama, Mizzou and South Carolina.
