McQuay Makes 400 Final on Third Day of World Championships
Monday, August 12, 2013 | Track and Field
2012 Olympic silver medalist and three-time NCAA Champion Tony McQuay advanced to the finals of the men's 400 meters at the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships Monday. The nine-day meet runs through Sunday, August 18 at Luzhniki Stadium.
McQuay easily advanced out of his semifinal in a season's best 44.66 to solidify his spot in Tuesday's final at 1:05 p.m. ET.
NCAA Champion and two-time USTFCCCA All-American Arman Hall (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was fifth in his semifinal in 45.54 but was unable to capture a place in the finals. Hall and McQuay will both represent the United States in the men's 4x400-meter relay later in the week.
“It feels great to have even made this team and get the opportunity to represent my country,” Hall said. “It's an honor to represent my family and the University of Florida here at Worlds. To be honest, I wish I could have made it to the final. I know I'm only 19 years old but I can be successful at this level and I wish I could have shown that here. I'm just going to go back to Gainesville, train harder, see what I can do more of and just continue to get better.”
Novlene Williams-Mills competed in the finals of the women's 400 meters, finishing eighth with a time of 51.49. Williams-Mills will participate in the heats of the women's 4x400-meter relay later in the week.
Kerron Clement qualified out of his heat in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 49.43, finishing second in his heat and sixth overall to automatically qualify for Tuesday's semifinal at 11:40 a.m. ET.
Ugonna Ndu (Newark, N.J.) competed in her first World Championships, crossing in 57.27 in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Ndu recently finished her career at Florida as a seven-time USTFCCCA All-American and school record-holder in the women's 400-meter hurdles, turning in a time of 56.12 at the SEC Outdoor Championships.
A strong Gator contingent is residing in Moscow, as 16 Gators have been granted the opportunity to represent their countries in Moscow, led by Florida head coach Mike Holloway. The 2013 USTFCCCA National Outdoor Head Coach of the Year, Holloway was chosen as head men's coach for Team USA.
Universal Sports Network and NBC will air 46 hours of premier track & field action from the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia from Saturday, August 10 through Sunday, August 18. The broadcast team of Ato Boldon, Tom Hammond, Lewis Johnson and Dwight Stones will call the action from Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, home of the 1980 Olympic Games.
