MILAN, Italy -- Four time Florida Volleyball All-American Kelly Murphy, a starter on the USA Volleyball Women's National Team, added yet another accolade to her decorated resume Sunday in Milan -- and perhaps the most impressive yet.
Murphy and Team USA defeated China 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24) Sunday in the FIVB Women's World Championship Match at the Mediolanum Forum in Italy, and in doing so made history.
Murphy, in just her second season with the national team, helped Team USA to the first-ever World Championship Gold Medal for the Red, White and Blue in any of the three volleyball majors -- the Olympic Games, World Cup and World Championship.
Murphy started all four sets Sunday in Milan and posted 13 points towards Team USA's first FIVB World Championship.
The Stars and Stripes swept Brazil on Saturday to advance to Sunday's gold-medal match against the Chinese, thanks in part to Murphy's 13 points. Brazil, the world's No. 1 team, has won the last two Olympic gold medals, beating the U.S., both in Beijing and London.
