Two Gators in Quarterfinals at Regionals

Two Gators remain undefeated in main draw singles action as they played their way to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, Saturday.
No. 100 Maxx Lipman, a 9-16 seed and a captain of this year's Gator squad, and No. 68-ranked and No. 5-seeded Elliott Orkin both punched their ticket to the main draw singles quarterfinals. Lipman defeated No. 79-ranked and No. 8-seeded Benjamin Lock of Florida State in the Round of 16, 6-2, 6-2. Orkin topped Kennesaw State's Simon Pritchard, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.
The two Gator sophomores battled back after dropping the first set of their respective Round of 32 main draw singles matches. Lipman dropped the first set to Paul Oosterbaan of Georgia, 3-6, but turned it around to take the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-0. Orkin fell behind Georgia State's Jannis Koeke early, 4-6. He was able to secure a spot in the Round of 16 when he defeated Koeke in sets two and three, 6-1, 6-2.
In the consolation singles draw, No. 70 Gordon Watson, another Gator captain, and Oliver Landert both picked up Round of 32 wins. Later, Watson moved on to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Felipe Jaworski from Georgia State. Landert advanced to the quarterfinal round after taking straight sets from Mercer's Oliver Snaider, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 42-ranked 5-8 seed Diego Hidalgo and Watson were handed their first doubles loss of the fall season when they dropped their quarterfinal match to No. 15 ranked and No. 3-seeded Jack Findel-Hawkins and Norbert Nemcsek of North Florida, 8-5.
Orkin will take on the No. 1 seed of the singles main draw, No. 12 Austin Smith of Georgia, in the quarterfinals. Lipman will face Piotr Lomacki of Miami, a 9-16 seed.

We are getting better in several areas. This tournament has given us so many opportunities to learn valuable lessons.

It's great to see Maxx regain some confidence. Winning does that for you. Elliott started strong in both matches again today and is working on being more consistent with pressure throughout the match.

Some of our guys are still trying to figure out the winning formula. This is the place to figure it out. I'm looking forward to our guys getting after it again tomorrow.
