Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Main Draw Day 1

Brooke Austin Advances in Riviera/ITA All-American Main Draw
Friday, October 3, 2014 | Women's Tennis
After advancing past multiple ranked opponents in three rounds of qualifying matches, Gator freshman Brooke Austin continued her stride and earned a first round singles victory in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships main draw at the Riviera Tennis Center Thursday.
Austin battled through three sets and defeated Virginia's No. 5-ranked and No. 4-seeded Julia Elbaba 7-6(6), 2-6, 7-5. Elbaba captured the consolation singles title at last year's ITA All-American event. The Cavaliers sophomore was the No. 4 seed at the 2014 NCAA Singles Championship.
“Brooke's match today was definitely a highlight,” said associate head coach Dave Balogh. “It's one of the best matches I've been fortunate to be a part of at the Riviera. Brooke playing under pressure today was the key. The bigger the moment, the more she stepped up her game.”
Freshman Josie Kuhlman also reached the main draw as a result of her success in qualifying matches, but her All-American run fell short, dropping straight sets to No. 7 Channelle Van Nguyen of UCLA, 6-4, 6-2. No. 14 Brianna Morgan was the only Gator to receive an automatic entry into the main draw. Morgan was defeated by Stanford's No. 33 Caroline Doyle, 6-1, 6-4.
“Josie and Brianna had a tough one today,” Balogh added. “They didn't play as well as we wanted, but both of their opponents deserve a lot of credit.”
Austin will face No. 13 Breaunna Addison in the second round of main draw singles at 12 p.m. ET. Consolation singles matches will begin at 1:45 p.m. ET. Kuhlman and Peggy Porter as well as Gator tandem Kourtney Keegan and Belinda Woolcock continue doubles action in the consolation draw.

HOW IT WORKS:
