Various Gator Victories on Day Two of Riviera/ITA All-American Main Draw
Saturday, October 4, 2014 | Women's Tennis
Gator freshman Brooke Austin and junior Brianna Morgan each served up multiple victories for the Orange & Blue on day two of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships main draw at the Riviera Tennis Center Friday.
Austin defeated No. 13-ranked Breaunna Addison of Texas, 6-0, 7-6(0) in the second round of main draw action. Despite dropping her first round main draw match, Morgan was ready to play today as she defeated Duke's No. 12-ranked Ester Goldfeld, 6-3, 6-1 in her first consolation singles matchup. Gator rookie Austin took down Stanford's No. 17 Carol Zhao, 6-3, 6-3 to secure a spot in the main draw semifinals. Representing the Gators in the consolation semifinals will be Morgan following a straight set victory over No. 22 Taylor Davidson of Stanford, 6-3, 6-4.
“Brianna and Brooke looked incredible out there today,” remarked associate head coach Dave Balogh. “At this stage, every opponent is tough, so every win is one to be proud of.”
Gator tandems No. 13-ranked Kourtney Keegan and Belinda Woolcock as well as Josie Kuhlman and Peggy Porter kicked off consolation doubles action in successful fashion. Both Florida duos reached the semifinal round after advancing through two rounds played.
“These girls came to play today,” Balogh stated of the doubles duos. “Both teams are in the semifinals of the back draw. Both had a tough one yesterday, but they did a great job of turning it around and improving on some aspects of their game that we discussed.”
Austin will take on another ranked opponent in No. 7-ranked and No. 6-seeded Channelle Van Nguyen of UCLA in the semifinals of main draw singles not before 2:30 p.m. ET. Morgan meets Virginia's No. 5-ranked and No. 2-seeded Julia Elbaba in the consolation semifinals at the same time. No. 13 Keegan and Woolcock face Lina Lileikite and Stephanie Wagner of Miami not before 4 p.m. ET, while Kuhlman and Porter play UCLA's No. 4-ranked No. 2 seed Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips.
“We've got six players in this event tomorrow,” Balogh said, “and we're going to continue to battle hard and do whatever it takes to advance.”

NEED TO KNOW INFO ON THE RIVIERA:
The Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., will again serve as the host site for the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The national championship, considered the first leg of the collegiate grand slam, began on Saturday, September 27 with pre-qualifying singles and doubles matches, which was hosted by UCLA. HOW IT WORKS:
The qualifying rounds are comprised of a singles draw of 64 and a doubles draw of 32. Just as with pre-qualifying, a singles player or doubles tandem must win three consecutive matches to stay alive and move into the main draw.
