Gator Women's Tennis Sends Five to National Indoors
Wednesday, November 5, 2014 | Women's Tennis
Five Gators will represent the Orange & Blue at the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Columbia University, to be played November 6 through November 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center, home of the US Open, in Flushing, New York.
The tournament serves as the culmination of the fall college tennis season and is considered the second-leg of the collegiate grand slam. The prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw.
Freshman Brooke Austin is familiar with the Billie Jean King courts as she opened her collegiate career there earlier this season, competing in the Junior Singles event of the US Open. She was the first of five Gators to qualify for National Indoors this fall when she reached the main draw semifinals of the 2014 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships last month. Austin is seeded fourth in singles heading into the tournament. Fellow rookie Josie Kuhlman earned an automatic berth into the tournament when she captured her first collegiate singles title at the 2014 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
With a 10-4 singles record in ITA action this fall, No.14 Brianna Morgan was selected to the singles draw and will face No. 11 Emina Bektas of Michigan in the first round. Austin will take on No. 64 Ilinca Andreea Stoica of Virginia Tech and Kuhlman will meet the No. 5 seed, No. 43 Maegan Manasse of California.
Austin and Kuhlman will participate in doubles action as well. Austin and doubles partner Kourtney Keegan qualified for the National Indoors doubles draw upon capturing the Southeast Regionals doubles crown. The duo defeated fellow Gators Kuhlman and freshman Peggy Porter in the regionals final. Kuhlman and Porter went 11-3 in doubles this fall. Both Gator tandems received a first round bye. Austin and Keegan open doubles action in the Round of 16 with Julyette Steur and Kyra Wojcik of Colorado. Kuhlman and Porter will face UCLA's Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips.
Tournament action opens with Round of 32 singles at 9 a.m. Doubles play will commence at 1 p.m.
