Brooke Austin Advances in Singles and Doubles at National Indoors

Freshman Brooke Austin advanced in both singles and doubles on day one of the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Columbia University at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center, home of the US Open, in Flushing, New York Thursday.

Austin, the No. 4-seed, opened the day with a singles victory over No. 64-ranked Ilinca Andreea Stoica of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-2. Josie Kuhlman, winner of the Southeast Regionals singles title, dropped her first round match to the No. 5 seed, No. 43-ranked Maegan Manasse of California, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 14 Brianna Morgan fell to No. 11 Emina Bektas of Michigan in a tough three-set match, 6-7, 6-0, 6-3.

The rookie Indianapolis, Indiana, native Austin paired with sophomore Kourtney Keegan to defeat Colorado's Julyette Steur and Kyra Wojcik, 6-2, 6-1, to close the day with another Gator victory.

“We had mixed results, but I'm proud of how we competed,” said head coach Roland Thornqvist. “This team wants it. It hurts when you lose when you train this hard, but that's the romance in sports. We will continue to get after it tomorrow.”

Austin will take on Saska Gavrilovska of Texas A&M in Round of 16 singles to start day two. Austin and Keegan play Oklahoma State's Kelsey Laurente and Viktoriya Lushkova in the doubles quarterfinals.
