Ulu Records Career-Best Round as Gators Finish T18th at 2014 NCAA Championship
Friday, May 23, 2014 | Women's Golf
Lone Florida women's golf senior Elcin Ulu didn't hold anything back in her final round donning the Orange and Blue. With just one over-par hole today, Ulu climbed the leaderboard to a top-25 finish with a career-low 18-hole score of 66 (-4) and led the Gators to their lowest round, 282 (+2), of the 2014 NCAA Championship at Tulsa Country Club.
Rolling off six birdies in day four, totaling 18 in four rounds, Ulu highlighted the championship event for the Gators with a final tournament score of 286 (+6). Following Ulu, junior Sarah Schober had a solid showing in her first NCAA Championship, as she finished the event at 14-over (294).
The Gators improved each day at Tulsa Country Club, with a significant 23-stroke difference from round one to round four. Third-ranked Duke is the 2014 NCAA Champion at a final score of 1,130 (10-over) as UF finished 49-over (1,169) for the tournament, tied for 18th on the leaderboard.
This year marks the final stroke-play women's golf national championship. Beginning in 2015 at The Concession Club in Bradenton, Florida, teams will compete in a match-play championship event, which men's golf has been using since 2009. The 2015 NCAA championship will be televised by Golf Channel.
Head Coach Emily Glaser Says: “Well, the highlight of the day was watching senior Elcin Ulu fire her career-low round as a Gator. I can't imagine a more special place to do it than the last round of the national championship. She played solid all week for us and I am very happy for her.
“It was nice to end the week with our lowest team score, as well. I'm not sure we had our best stuff here this week, but the girls fought really hard today.
“This was the first NCAA Championship for three of our five players, so the experience they gained from this week was invaluable. I think they will leave here with their eyes open and hungry for the future.”
