Stewart, Rogers Named All-Americans
Wednesday, May 28, 2014 | Softball
On the eve of the Women's College World Series, the University of Florida softball team placed two student-athletes on the NFCA All-America teams, announced Wednesday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The Gators' All-America selections are Kelsey Stewart (First Team) and Hannah Rogers (Third Team). Rogers' selection makes her the first four-time All-American in Gator Softball history.
A preseason All-America selection (espnW), Stewart leads Florida in hitting (.435), runs scored (63), hits (94), doubles (14), triples (six), total bases (141) and stolen bases (34). The sophomore owns two of the three 30-steal seasons in program history. Stewart has improved from her freshman year in batting average, runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases and slugging, while reducing her strikeouts. This season, the infielder has set or tied personal single-game bests for runs scored (four, March 8 vs. Ole Miss), hits (four, twice; last: April 20 at Texas A&M), RBI (four, May 17 vs. Stetson at the NCAA Gainesville Regional), doubles (two, twice; last: April 20 at Texas A&M) and stolen bases (two, four times; last: May 2 at Arkansas). The Wichita, Kan., native hit a three-run home run in Game 3 of the Super Regional against Washington on Sunday, helping to propel the Gators to their sixth WCWS appearance. In addition to her First Team All-America selection, Stewart also was named to the NFCA All-Southeast Region Second Team, the All-SEC First Team and the SEC All-Defensive Team.
A Senior CLASS Award finalist, Rogers paces the Gators in wins (26), ERA (1.68), strikeouts (154) and innings pitched (195.1). The right-hander is tied with Baylor's Whitney Canion as the NCAA's active career wins leader (123), and became the second pitcher in Florida history to record 100 career wins when she earned the victory in UF's 11-1 (5 innings) win over Hawaii on Feb. 14 at the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas. Rogers ranks among Florida's all-time leaders in wins (second), games started (second – 142), strikeouts (second – 820), saves (second – 13), appearances (second – 186), innings pitched (second – 960.0), shutouts (T-2nd – 38), winning percentage (fourth – .799), opponent's batting average (fifth – 1.99) and ERA (sixth – 1.68). Along with her Second Team All-America honor, Rogers earned NFCA All-Southeast Region Second Team, All-SEC Second Team and SEC All-Defensive Team recognition.
Florida will face Baylor in the WCWS opener Thursday at noon at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. ESPN will televise the contest, with radio coverage available on WGGG (1230-AM).
