Ciarra Brewer Jumps to Silver at USA Outdoor Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Florida junior All-American triple jumper Ciarra Brewer, the 2014 SEC indoor and outdoor champion in the triple jump, worked her way to a silver-medal finish in the event at the 2014 USA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento Thursday with a 13.57m/44-6.25 performance.
Brewer and fellow juniors Fawn Miller and Kyle Strawn each competed in finals of their respective events to open competition for the Orange and Blue at the USA Outdoor Championships on the Sacramento State University campus. Miller placed sixth (57.18m/187-7) in the javelin, while Strawn was 14th (65.87m/216-1) in the men's hammer throw.
A quartet of current Gators advanced to semifinals in the 400m and 100m Thursday, and Najee Glass led the Florida qualifying corps with a 45.53 performance in the first round of the 400m to qualify eighth for semifinals. Senior Ebony Eutsey (52.91) advanced in the women's 400m and Florida dashers Shayla Sanders (11.49) and Antwan Wright (10.41) qualified for semis 12th and 14th, respectively, in the 100m.
Florida is well represented in Sacramento, as several former Gator greats are also action at USA Outdoors this weekend, including top seeded triple jumpers Christian Taylor and Will Claye and former Florida sprinter Calvin Smith. “I felt good, but I was battling a bit with my ankle. It's been bothering me a little. I just kept my mind focused and put some jumps out there. I just wanted to try to finish out the season strong. I'm thankful that God blessed me to be healthy.”
On having USAs after NCAAs in a non-World Championship year
"It's just a little bit longer. My outdoor season was a bit shorter because of hamstring issues at the beginning. I don't feel like it was any different. After NCAAs, sometimes people's minds get shut down, so you just have to mentally prepare yourself to have one more meet. It just helps prepare me for next year with Worlds and hopefully the Olympics the year after that.”
