Gators Trek West to Eugene Sunday for NCAA Track & Field Championships
Sunday, June 8, 2014 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. -- On to Eugene! The Florida track and field programs head out west to Eugene, Ore., Sunday for the 2014 NCAA Track and Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field June 11-14.
The Orange and Blue qualified a contingent of 25 student-athletes, 13 men and 12 women, for the capstone event of the outdoor track and field season. The Gators, ranked No. 2 (men) and No. 4 (women) in the USTFCCCA Division I National Computer Rankings, have a fun – and full – week ahead before competing for the program's seventh and eighth national championships starting Wednesday.
Florida's six track and field national championships came in the form of a women's indoor title in 1992, before the men's squad struck for three consecutive indoor championships from 2010-12. UF doubled up indoors and outdoors on the men's side in 2012, bringing home the first outdoor title that year before making it back-to-back championships by tying for the crown in 2013. The Florida women will be aiming for a second national title, their first outdoors, while the men have their sights set on three straight outdoors.
The University of Florida athletics program has two national titles in 2014 so far -- gymnastics and softball, and the track and field squads will look to add to the impressive run, writes GatorZone.com Senior Writer Scott Carter.
