Three Florida Women's Golfers Participating in World Amateur Team Championships
Tuesday, September 2, 2014 | Women's Golf
A trio of current Gator women's golfers will begin competition on Wednesday at the World Amateur Team Championships in Karuizawa, Japan.
Junior Ursa Orehek (Slovenia) and sophomores Maria Torres (Puerto Rico) and Karolina Vlckova (Czech Republic) from head coach Emily Glaser's squad will be representing their home countries and former Gator Elcin Ulu (2012-14) is playing in the tournament for Turkey. Senior Camilla Hedberg played for Spain at the 2012 event.
“This is an exciting tournament for our girls, as it's always a special feeling to play for your country,” Glaser said. “With golf not being in the Olympics until 2016, this has always been the equivalent of our Olympic Championship, which gives you an idea of the level or pride involved with this event. I am happy for our players that they will have this experience.”
Glaser donned the Red, White and Blue for the United States in 2002, while assistant coach Janice Olivencia competed in the 2004 tournament for Puerto Rico.
Conducted by the International Golf Federation (formerly the World Amateur Golf Council), which comprises the national governing bodies of golf in more than 125 countries, the World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition rotated among three geographic zones of the world: Asia-Pacific, American and European-African.
Each team has two or three players and plays 18 holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team's score for the championship.
The winning team in the women's competition receives custody of the Espirito Santo Trophy for the ensuing two years. Members of the winning teams receive gold medals, members of the second-place teams receive silver medals and members of the third-place teams receive bronze medals. The lowest individual score in each championship is recognized at the respective closing ceremony, but no prize is awarded.
