COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Florida track and field hall of fame head coach Mike Holloway will add another honor to his resume Friday evening as one of six Ohio natives and track and field and cross country coaches set to be inducted into the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame.
Holloway's storied success at the University of Florida is no secret, with five national championships since 2010 and seven SEC titles to his name while at the helm of the Gator track and field program. A Team USA mainstay at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Holloway has three times been named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men's Indoor Head Coach of the Year (2010, 2011, 2012), has twice been the USTFCCCA Outdoor Head Coach of the Year (2012, 2013) and has picked up seven SEC Coach of the Year honors along the way.
Last year Holloway was inducted into the Santa Fe Saints Hall of Fame for his achievements as a Saint before coming to Florida and this year, Holloway will go back to his roots and add Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame accolades to the tally at a ceremony in Columbus Friday evening.
"Watching Mouse's success at all levels has been wonderful,” Ed Stone, Holloway's high school coach and mentor at Columbus Linden-McKinley remarked. “The influence he has had on so many young women and men as a coach and mentor cannot be measured. Through it all he is still the same humble person with the same incredible work ethic I saw way back in Ohio. The University of Florida can boast that they truly do have the best there is in Coach Holloway."
While the No. 1/2 Gators continue their quest for the program's seventh and eighth national titles with an indoor competition in Fayetteville this weekend, Holloway's mother, Nelvina, will accept the Hall of Fame honor on his behalf at Friday evening's banquet from Stone.
Holloway, one of the top coaches in the world, has tutored a multitude of World Champions and Olympians at the University of Florida, including the likes of John Capel, Kerron Clement, Jeff Demps, Tony McQuay, Cory McGee, Dennis Mitchell, Genevieve LaCaze, Shara Proctor, Olympic Gold Medalist Christian Taylor, Olympic Silver Medalist Will Claye and many more. During Holloway's time at the University of Florida, the men's program has put together over 300 All-America performances, while the women's program is on the rise with nearly 150 All-America honors under Holloway's tutelage.
Back in Columbus, Holloway's first track meets as an athlete took place at Linmoor Middle School before he continued on at Columbus Linden-McKinley and guided the Panthers to the State Championship his senior year in 1977 with state titles in the 120HH and the 330LH, while running a leg on the 440 relay.
Holloway competed for Santa Fe in 1978 and 1979, finishing as the NJCAA runner up in the 60-yard hurdles before coaching at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, where his Bobcats brought home eight State Championship titles and plenty of District and Regional titles along the way. Holloway returned to Santa Fe and received his associate's degree in 1993 before continuing on to the University of Florida, where he received his bachelor's degree and started developing the Gator track and field program into a national powerhouse.
