No. 1/2 Gators Keep Indoor Momentum Going on Day One of Razorback Invitational
Saturday, January 31, 2015 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Senior pentathlete Brittany Harrell started the day off right for the Gator track and field squads on the first day of the Razorback Invitational with the second-best score of her Florida career (4,226), while the UF momentum carried into evening prelims and finals at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.
Harrell used a second-place finish in the long jump and a PR in the 800m (2:12.87) to take second in the pentathlon early Friday afternoon. In Friday evening action, three of the top five spots in the women's 200m were inked in Orange and Blue, as junior Kyra Jefferson debuted the 2015 indoor campaign with top honors in the 200m (23.06) and the fastest time in the country and world so far this season, while junior Destinee Gause tied a PR (23.22) with her second-place finish. Junior Robin Reynolds crossed fifth for the Gators (23.51) and sophomore Nick Uruburu made his mark with a PR in the men's 200m (21.37) and a ninth-place finish.
Seven Gators are headed to Saturday finals following prelims of the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash Friday evening, while Florida's jumpers were firing on all cylinders, senior Marquis Dendy with a victory in the long jump (8.02m/26-3.75), and freshman KeAndre Bates (7.84m/25-8.75) with a huge PR and record-book worthy performance for second place behind Dendy. First-year Gator Jhonny Victor jumped to a PR in the high jump (2.11m/6-11) to finish fourth.
The Gators return to the track and field Saturday afternoon and for the second weekend in a row Gator fans will be able to keep up with all the track and field action through SEC Network+, as the network will live stream action again Saturday afternoon from the Randal Tyson Track Center, where 17 top-25 men's and women's programs are in action at the Razorback Invite.
HEARING OUT HOLLOWAY
“I'm very proud of the team as a whole. We are very focused again this weekend. Brittany Harrell came out and gave us a great start with the second-best score of her life in the pentathlon, so very proud of her. I'm also proud of the ladies in the 200m, it was a season-opening best for everyone, including Nick Uruburu with a PR in the 200 as well. For Jhonny (Victor) to come out and jump 2.11m, that was great and I'm also very proud of the guys in the long jump. Marquis Dendy had the best jump he's had indoors in a couple of years and KeAndre (Bates) had a PR by nearly a foot. We're really looking forward to tomorrow, staying focused and getting back out there and competing.”
