GAINESVILLE, Fla.- The University of Florida women's tennis team has swept the doubles competition at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships this weekend with all four doubles tandems advancing to the semifinals.
Singles action saw four Gators advance to the quarterfinals with each of the four UF players defeating ranked players. The No. 2-ranked Brooke Austin defeated FSU's No. 66-ranked Daneika Borthwick, 6-0, 7-5. Belinda Woolcock was victorious against No. 74 ranked Johnnise Renaud of Georgia Tech, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Anna Danilina won against Miami's No. 73-ranked Wendy Zhang in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. The No. 38-ranked Kourtney Keegan upset No. 13-ranked Sinead Lohan of Miami, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-5.
The UF doubles tandems swept the competition on Saturday with all four advancing to the semifinals. The No. 1-ranked duo of Austin and Keegan defeated the No. 51-ranked Brinson and King of Georgia, 8-4. FSU's Borthwick and Noi fell to Danilina and Brianna Morgan, 8-6. No. 54-ranked Josie Kuhlman and Woolcock were able to upset the No. 16-ranked Garcia and Shaffer of Georgia, 8-4. Spencer Liang and Peggy Porter cruised to a victory in their match against Georgia Tech's Hourigan and Woodard, 8-1.
Austin and Keegan will compete against Morgan and Danilina on Sunday and Porter and Liang will face off against Kuhlman and Woolcock.
Coach Thornqvist's Thoughts
“I thought we played great today in doubles. Doubles were spectacular today from the first point. We were really aggressive. Offensively, we have really improved thanks to the offensive drills that Dave is putting us through day in and day out. In singles, we lost some close ones and we won some close ones. Overall, I feel like we are getting better in singles and just the same as yesterday, I thought we were very physical. Mobility and strength are really showing especially with Kourtney's win in three sets and Anna's win in three sets on a long second day. Tomorrow we will have some Gator matchups and I am looking forward to seeing some great sportsmanship and class.”
