SANTO DOMINGO ESTE, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC- Former Gator All-American Sekou Bangoura took the singles title at the Dominican Republic F3 Futures this weekend. The Gator had to battle back in four of his five matches from a set down to win the title.
The Bradenton, Fla. native cruised through the round of 32 against Manuel Castellanos, 6-0, 6-2. In the round of 16, Bangoura came back from a set down to defeat Spain's Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. The same was true for the quarterfinal round where fellow-American Alexios Halebian tested the Gator taking the first set and forcing a tiebreaker in the second set. Bangoura was able to win the match over Halebian, 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
In the semifinal, Germany's Peter Torebko fell to Bangoura, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The final saw the former Gator matched up against Facundo Mena of Argentina. Mena took the first set by way of a tiebreaker, but for the fourth time, Bangoura battled back and won the match, 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2.
The singles title is the third of Bangoura's career of the ITF tour. He also has 13 doubles titles, including four in the 2015 season.
