BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Diego Hidalgo of the No. 14 University of Florida men's tennis team was named the Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, Feb. 11 by the conference office.
Hidalgo earned his first career SEC honor after he clinched a 4-2 victory for the Gators over No. 32 Florida State, 4-2, in a classic Share a Little Sunshine Showdown between the in-state rivals on Friday, Feb. 6 in Tallahassee.
The Guayaquil, Ecuador, native was elevated to the No. 2 position in Florida's singles line-up for the first time this season for the matchup with the Seminoles. In front of a packed crowd at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center, Hidalgo took down then-ranked No. 99 Marco Nunez, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-5, after falling behind in the third and deciding set to secure the match win for the Gators. Nunez marks the second ranked singles opponent Hidalgo has defeated in Florida's last three outings.
Hidalgo remains undefeated in singles through seven matches played this season. In the most recent ITA rankings released yesterday afternoon, Hidalgo garnered career-high rankings in both singles (No. 34) and doubles (No. 28 with Gordon Watson).
The Gators return to the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville on Thursday, Feb. 26 to host No. 4 Georgia in their conference opener at 5:30 p.m.
