Trio of Women’s Throwers Get Outdoor Season Started at UCF Black and Gold Challenge
Saturday, March 21, 2015 | Track and Field
ORLANDO, Fla. -- While the start of the outdoor season is here, the Gators eased into competition in the Sunshine State Saturday by taking three women's throwers to the UCF Black and Gold Challenge in Orlando at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex.
A pair of freshmen in Lloydricia Cameron and Jontavia Dykes made their outdoor debuts for the Orange and Blue – and did so in winning fashion, while the veteran Jayla Bostic got her third outdoor season started in the hammer throw alongside Cameron and Dykes.
Cameron and Dykes shined in the discus throw with first (49.22m/161-5) and second-place (46.55m/152-8) finishes, respectively, while Bostic led the way in the hammer throw for Florida with a runner-up finish. Bostic used a 53.35m/175 effort for her second-place finish, while Cameron finished fourth (50.16m/164-6), Dykes 14th (38.04m/124-9).
LISTENING TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH STEVE LEMKE
“The freshmen did a really good job today. We wanted to get started with the outdoor throwing events that we don't compete in indoors as soon as possible with our freshmen. Jontavia (Dykes) had a personal best in the discus, so that was nice. Lloydricia (Cameron) had her first meet outdoors after coming off the indoor season and was five feet short of her PR. All of our competitions will only get harder from here, so it was good to get started. We wanted Jayla (Bostic) to throw once before Texas Relays next week and one week after NCAA Indoors, it wasn't easy to bounce back. We're really looking forward to next week and getting everyone out there, including Fawn (Miller) in the javelin.”
