BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Josie Kuhlman of the No. 5 University of Florida women's tennis team was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Wednesday, March 25 by the conference office.
Kuhlman was awarded her first-ever SEC weekly award for clinching back-to-back matches for the Gators versus No. 17 Ole Miss and No. 57 Mississippi State. In two matches on the week, Kuhlman went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles with fellow rookie Peggy Porter. In the most thrilling doubles event of the season, the freshman tandem battled back from a 7-4 deficit against Ole Miss' Arianne Hartono and Iris Verboven and captured a crucial 8-7 (6) victory to help the Gators to the doubles point, clinched by Spencer Liang and Belinda Woolcock, who also won their match in a tiebreaker.
The Ponte Vedra, Fla., native has recorded a singles point in seven of her last eight outings. She is currently riding a seven-match singles winning streak, the second-longest active streak by a Gator.
Kuhlman remains undefeated in SEC singles and boasts a 4-1 record versus ranked opponents in dual match singles action.
The Gators return to the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville on Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m. to host No. 26 South Carolina.
