
Kyra Jefferson Tabbed SEC Women’s Runner of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Florida sophomore sprinter Kyra Jefferson used a world-leading 400m victory at the 2015 Florida Relays to pick up the No. 2 Gators' first SEC Outdoor Athlete of the Week honor Tuesday following an impressive showing at Percy Beard Track last weekend.

Jefferson clocked a 51.50 quarter mile, tops in the SEC, NCAA and world right now, while running the second leg of UF's season-best 4x400-meter relay that took top honors in the invitational section at 3:31.00 with the fourth-best time in the world thus far in the outdoor season. Junior Destinee Gause led off UF's 4x4 before Jefferson's second leg. Jefferson passed the stick to freshman Destiny Washington and junior Claudia Francis brought it home on the anchor leg for the Orange and Blue.
The SEC and NCAA Indoor 200m Champion, Jefferson now owns the sixth-fastest 400m outdoors in Florida history. Up next, Jefferson and the Gators will host to the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational April 24 for UF's final home competition of the 2015 outdoor season.

The No. 2 Gators walked away from their home-hosted Florida Relays with a number of SEC, NCAA and world-leading marks, highlighted by sophomore Kyra Jefferson's world-leading 51.50 in the 400m, while UF's men's 4x4, composed of Nick Uruburu, Dedric Dukes, Eric Futch and Najee Glass clocked a world-leading mark with a season-best performance of 3:01.78. Glass made a splash in the men's 400m with a SEC and NCAA-leading 45.19, a new PR. Seniors Bridgette Owens (12.75w) and Ciarra Brewer (13.49m/44-3.25) both turned in nation-leading performances in the 100m hurdles and triple jump, respectively, while the Gators also had some younger athletes step up, like a new PR in the hammer throw for freshman Lloydricia Cameron (54.80/179-9). A number of season and career-best marks highlighted one of UF's two home meets this outdoor season, as nearly 6,000 track and field fans came through the gates at Percy Beard Track in Gainesville for the 76th Pepsi Florida Relays.
