GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida sophomore men's golfer Ryan Orr was named a member of the SEC Community Service team, the league announced Monday.
The SEC selects a community service team for each conference sport, aiming to highlight one athlete per school who gives back to his or her community through service.
Orr was one of 25 student-athletes who helped select and wrap presents, entertain children and deliver presents for Miracle on Main Street, an event that provided Gainesville families the opportunity to shop for presents donated through gifts from the community. His efforts helped more than 1,000 local kids receive what could have been their only Christmas gifts.
Orr was also involved in Climb for Cancer, a non-profit organization sponsoring children fighting cancer. He helped sports camp participants enjoy an assortment of activities, such as basketball, soccer, football, volleyball and dance drills.
In addition, the sophomore donated time to Gator Tracks, which provided shoes for students in seven schools in Alachua County on free or reduced lunch. Student-athletes, staff, coaches and administration collected school-aged shoes, socks and monetary donations. Ryan helped wrap and organize the 450 pairs of shoes and was one of the Gator student-athletes who delivered the shoes to the school children.
Orr is also the men's golf team's representative on the UF Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
