Gators Push NCAA Championships Roster to 12 After Day Two at East Preliminary
Saturday, May 30, 2015 | Track and Field
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Florida's track and field teams pushed the Gator NCAA Championships roster to 12 athletes following the second day of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville Friday, with seven men qualified, five ladies headed for the finals site in Eugene June 10-13 and a day of competition still remaining at Hodges Stadium.
Ten Gators joined seniors Marquis Dendy and Fawn Miller with entries in Eugene Friday, including fellow veteran Mark Parrish, who capped off a stellar day of action for Florida at Hodges Stadium in the steeplechase by breaking a 13-year-old school record (8:37.64) to advance to Eugene his final campaign donning the Orange and Blue.
Florida added three 800m runners in Andres Arroyo (1:47.33), Ryan Schnulle (1:47.60) and Claudia Francis (2:02.92), Francis in PR fashion to improve her fourth-place standing in school history in the event.
The Gators' sprint crew also got it done, advancing a pair of 100m athletes in Dedric Dukes (10.29, 0.6w) and Shayla Sanders (11.51, 0.7) and a duo of quartermilers in Najee Glass (45.51) and Robin Reynolds (51.97). Sophomore Eric Futch and freshman Darrielle McQueen also stamped their tickets to the Pacific Coast in the 400 hurdles (49.91) and long jump (6.10m/20-0.25), respectively.
In first-round track events Friday, a combined five Gator hurdlers and 200m sprinters advanced to Saturday quarterfinals, including sophomore Yanick Hart, who ran a speedy 13.68 in the 110 hurdles to jump onto UF's all-time top-10 list at No. 8 in school history.
Saturday's finale gets started for Florida at 1:30 p.m. with senior Jayla Bostic in the women's hammer throw, while the men's and women's 4x1s will kick off the last day of the East Preliminary on the track at 6 p.m. Twelve athletes and 12 relays from each event at both the East and West (Austin, Texas) Preliminaries advance to the NCAA Championships finals site in Eugene.
HEARING OUT HOLLOWAY
“I thought we had another solid day. I still think in some places we have to be reminded that this is the NCAA Championship -- we need to match the passion and intensity of the teams around us. Very proud of a lot of our athletes today, Najee (Glass) and Robin (Reynolds) in the 400, our 100 sprinters too. I was impressed with Bridgette (Owens) in the hurdles and Mark (Parrish) in the steeplechase; to qualify and break a school record, he was great. For Darrielle (McQueen) to get through as a freshman in the long jump against a tough field was impressive. Our 800 runners also battled a very tough field. We had great qualifying today in the 200 and Yanick (Hart) was great in the hurdles, his mark was top-10 all-time in school history. Yanick and Coach Tucker have been working really hard. We have one more day, we'll get back to the hotel, get rested and focused to come out here and do what the Gators do.”
