GAINESVILLE, Fla. – It is hard to imagine the University of Florida women's tennis squad getting any stronger during this offseason with the reigning SEC Champions returning all of their letter winners from last season. Yet, the Gators did just that on Wednesday when they announced the addition of Anna Danilina (ON-nah donna-LEE-nah) to the 2015-16 roster.
The Moscow, Russia, native will have three years of eligibility for Florida head coach Roland Thornqvist. Danilina comes to Florida with an impressive rèsumè comprised of international experience in large championship events.
As a junior on the International Tennis Federation Circuit from 2009 to 2013, Danilina competed in 41 events, including the Junior Championships at Wimbledon, the Australian Junior Open, the Roland Garros Junior Open Championships and the US Open Junior Tennis Championships. In all four of the grand slam events, she reached the Quarterfinal round or higher in doubles, as well as, reaching the Quarterfinal round in the singles event at the US Open Junior Championships in 2012.
In the 2012 ITF year end combined rankings, Danilina was ranked No.12 in the world and boasted a career-high No. 3 combined world ranking on April 2, 2013.
Since joining the ITF Pro Circuit in 2013, Danilina has already captured five doubles titles and one singles title. The 19-year-old continues to move up in the WTA Professional Rankings, where she currently sits at No. 368 in doubles and No. 703 in singles.
Thornqvist Thoughts:
“We couldn't be more excited to have Anna as a Gator. She's already an accomplished and talented singles and doubles player and her addition to our team will make our practices even more competitive and entertaining than they have already been. Her presence will strengthen our lineup from top to bottom. We can't wait to get her on campus.”
